About Shard!

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Rescue ID: 04-167
  • Housetrained: Yes
Hello, my name is Shard! I am a 5-year old standard-sized American Eskimo boy who loves and craves attention! Though I weigh about 26 pounds, I like to be picked up and carried around on my back like a little baby! I will go totally limp and give the sweetest look on my face, like "Please don't hurt me...I'm trusting you with all my might." I am a winner because of my personality, and am very happy and obedient. And I am just THE most loving guy you could ever find!

I love to go for walks, and do very well on a leash. I have the most beautiful gait--it is truly a thing of beauty to see me walk or run! (Some people say I move like a Tennessee Walker.) I lift my feet right off the ground and keep my back straight! I am definitely a blue ribbon winner in that category! I know my name and will come when called!

I have no problem with small children, as I am very gentle and sociable with them. I get along really great with my foster mommy's Westies (both smaller than I), but I'm not comfortable around dogs my size or bigger. I guess because I came from a home with 9 dogs, I had to stand up for myself against the bigger guys there. So now if I see a big dog I might get defensive toward him, which generally is NOT like me, because otherwise I'm so loving and passive. But I am very protective of my humans, a common and admirable trait of my breed. My foster mommy says that now that I've bonded with my foster family, I don't like strangers to come up to them, even if they know my family. This especially happens when we go for a walk. I won't pull at my leash to "get at" the strangers, or stand up on my back legs, or even try to bite them, but I do know how to growl just the right way to keep them from approaching and trying to hurt my family! Once my foster mommy tells me "It's okay," I settle down and get back to our walk.

I am house-trained and have lots of other good habits! I don't dig and won't zoom out of the gate or the house when you open the door. I'm alert but don't bark too excessively. I'm not a jumper and don't slobber, lick, or scratch. I LOVE to go for rides in the car, and I'm not scared to go to the vet. I'm a great kid, looking to find my new forever home. Will it be with you? I AM a little shy around people I don't know, so I usually won't let strangers touch me until I feel comfortable around them. But once I get to know you and trust you, I will love you back unconditionally!

My best friend is another American Eskimo named Tara, whose profile and pictures you can also see on this website. We have been friends for a long time, and we would like to be adopted together if at all possible, but that's not a requirement.

If you are interested in me, we can do what's called an "Eskie Railroad" if I'm not local to you. This is a group of volunteer drivers who will each drive a certain distance to get me to you! I am in Dothan, AL with my foster mommy, Pamela. If you would like to know more about me (and my pal, Tara), please send an e-mail right away!

Please contact Liz at: liz@eskierescuers.org for more information.

You can also go to our web site at: www.eskierescuers.org and fill out an adoption application for me!

Thank you and WOOF!

non-profit organization. Please click the donation button above to make a tax-deductible donation, and help make a difference to even one American Eskimo dog!

Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state.

If I'm not local to you, as explained above, and you really have your heart set on me, you will have to make special arrangements so ERU can get me to you safely (for example, flying me to you at your own expense, or paying a transport group to drive me to you). Note: We may ask that you to make a donation to cover transport costs if the distance is great and we have trouble finding transport drivers.

There is an adoption fee required; and, please be aware, Eskie Rescuers United will not adopt out its dogs as outdoor dogs.
